Summary: | The farmer seeks to find out what is causing the persistent infection on the stem of her jackfruit tree showing black patches with an oozing sticky fluid.
How can she control this problem? |
ID of request in RUN: | 3569 |
Practical Instruction: | Cause of the condition:
Stem borers that bore through the trunk of the tree, hence secondary infection of the trunk by a fungus coupled with insects attracted due to the smell from the oozing sap
Control
- Control the stem borers by spraying the tree with Dursban, an insecticide mixed with Redomil, a fungicide.
- Make a paste of Redomil and apply around the wound.
- Also do drenching with copper-based fungicide e.g Mancozeb around the tree so that it can minimize the spread.
- Spray the whole tree with Redomil to control other fungal inmfections that affect leaves and fruits. |
Conditions for success: | If no further injury is subjected to the tree. Avoid placing barbed wire on tree trunks because it causes injury and wounds and invites fungal infections. |
Conditions for failure: | If you fail to spray with the recommended fungicides. |
Expected short term effect: | Plant would should be able to heal in a few weeks times. |
Expected mid-term effect: | If conditions are proper, there should be a healthy plant. |
Expected long-term effect: | Good harvest of crop |
