Instruction pratique: | 1. The farmer should plant improved and certified maize seeds like longe 5,Hybrid 6H, which are are fast growing, resistant to pests and diseases of maize.
2. The farmer should plant his maize early such that it can benefit from early rains and soil nutrients that’s the nitrogen flush.
3. Space maize 75cmx50cm to let faster and healthy growth of maize.
4. Don’t use the seed for the previous season. Buy from a certified source from your area after getting extension advice.
5. Uproot and burn all maize stems that may be affected by stalk-borers.
6. Apply one bottle cap of DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) per hole at planting and side dress with 2 bottle caps of urea.
7. Properly dispose of plant debris after harvest as this destroys the hibernating stalk borer larvae and prevents pest carryover to the next season.
8. Keep the garden free from weeds because they harbour pest and diseases. Weed at least twice. Control weeds with pre-emergent chemicals like Lasso Atrazine, Round-up or Basagrim to kill hedges and 2,4,D kills broad-leaved weeds. |
